Matter Fabric Support
ESP RainMaker Matter Fabric Support is the platform module for building and operating branded Matter ecosystems. It covers device management, local control, and cloud services, so manufacturers keep control of the product experience and long-term ecosystem strategy.
As Matter becomes the interoperability standard for smart homes, devices need to work with Amazon Alexa, Apple Home, and Google Home without giving up the brand’s own apps, cloud, and user relationships. ESP RainMaker Matter Fabric Support is built for that requirement.
What is Matter Fabric?
A Matter Fabric is a local, virtual network that spans Wi-Fi, Thread, Ethernet, and other physical transports in a home. It groups Matter devices, controllers, and commissioners (such as mobile apps) so they can communicate securely on the local network. Matter also supports Multi-Admin and Joint Fabric for cross-ecosystem management.
ESP RainMaker takes Fabric management to the cloud, so customers can run a private, branded Matter ecosystem on top of that local Fabric.
What ESP RainMaker adds
ESP RainMaker parses the Matter protocol in the cloud, covers Matter product categories, and maps Matter clusters and attributes to a human-readable Thing Model. Teams can manage Matter devices through the cloud without building their own protocol stack.
- PKI and certificates. During commissioning, RainMaker can issue Node Operational Certificates (NOCs) for the Fabric. Device identity across the lifecycle is managed in the cloud, so customers do not need a separate certificate system.
- User-level Fabric management. A user can own multiple Fabrics, each bound to their account. The platform covers create, configure, share, and delete, plus the full sharing-invitation flow. See Group Sharing & Node Group.
- App and SDK. The ESP RainMaker Home app (React Native) already supports Matter commissioning (BLE or QR code), local control on the LAN, and remote control through a cloud-connected controller.
@espressif/rainmaker-matter-sdkexposes the same capabilities — Fabric management, commissioning, certificates, and challenge-response — for branded apps built on@espressif/rainmaker-base-sdk. - Matter controllers. Matter is a local protocol. A controller (touch panel, speaker, TV, router, or even an end device such as a smart plug) keeps a persistent cloud connection so the home also gets remote control. Espressif provides controller examples based on ESP-Matter and ESP RainMaker, including ESP32-P4 touch-panel hubs and ESP32-S31 voice speakers.
Two integration models
Unified management on ESP RainMaker. Use RainMaker as the IoT cloud for both Matter and non-Matter devices. The serverless backend, open-source apps, voice-assistant integrations, and firmware SDKs are ready to use. This path suits brands that want Matter quickly without operating an extra cloud.
Cloud-to-cloud integration. Customers with an existing business cloud can add Matter Fabric Support as modules — Fabric management, PKI issuance, and Matter protocol parsing — without replacing the rest of their stack. The Matter Fabric Interface is the usual cloud API for this path, and can also be used in the unified model when a product needs it.
ESP RainMaker is built on AWS serverless architecture. Private deployments keep data under the customer’s control and can scale to large device fleets.
Thread devices on the same Fabric
A Thread Border Router (TBR) connects Thread devices to the rest of the home network so Matter-over-Thread products can join the same Fabric as Wi-Fi Matter devices.
Thread Border Router support can be enabled in the matter_controller example, so one hub can act as both a Matter controller and a TBR.
The ESP RainMaker app can add a Thread Border Router, keep Thread network information, and use that information during Matter commissioning to add Matter-over-Thread devices.
Matter-ready upgrades for existing devices
Non-Matter devices already in the field can be upgraded to Matter over OTA. RainMaker can deliver DACs and Matter onboarding payloads from the cloud, with APIs to retrieve pairing codes, so products can join the Matter ecosystem without a hardware redesign.

Use the latest matter_controller firmware as a Matter controller example. It is intended for demos and testing, and as a starting point for product development. In the app SDK it is the RainMaker Controller that relays Matter operations when the phone is not on the home LAN.
